Your quote is higher. What is being compared?

“Your quote is higher.”

Fictional teaching example. People, dialogue and product details are invented for practice.

Your role: You are a home-services contractor discussing a written project estimate.

What you know going in
  • No installation scope, price, repair need or disposal term is confirmed by this scenario.
  • The competing quote’s exclusions are unknown; do not infer its quality or contents.
  • Technical findings and project terms must come from an appropriate inspection and the actual written estimates.

A worked conversation

  1. Homeowner

    Your quote is higher.
  2. Contractor

Which work items are you comparing?

“Your quote is higher” raises a Money objection at Surface Criteria. First identify what the buyer is comparing; do not defend the number with a slogan.

  3. Homeowner

I need two rooms usable, and the lower quote may not include disposal or the repair.
  4. Contractor

We have not seen their itemization. What would you like clarified in mine?

Direct questioning identifies the buyer’s actual job-to-be-done: usable rooms, disposal and repair assumptions.

  5. Homeowner

Disposal, repair assumptions, and when each room is unavailable.
  6. Contractor

I’ll show those lines in my estimate and mark the repair as pending inspection. We can compare totals when the scope is stable.

Consultative mode makes the written estimate and open inspection items inspectable; it does not diagnose work or the competitor’s quote.

  7. Homeowner

That works. I’ll request the other itemization too.
  8. Contractor

Then we can compare the documents side by side. You can decide whether the scope and timing work for your home.

Recap preserves timing and scope as separate criteria, with the repair finding still open.

A fresh situation

Try the idea somewhere new

A buyer says two quotes cover the same work but warranty terms differ. Neither warranty document is available.

What should you do?

Task-specific feedback; a choice does not establish skill, professional advice, or an industry outcome.

Practise the words before the call

Say your next question aloud once. Listen for whether it invites correction. Then compare it with the worked example.

Read silently or say it aloud. This page does not record you. Keep real client names and private details out of your practice notes.
