They trust their advisor. Why this conversation?
Find the reason for a second conversation before presenting a second opinion. Build the next step around the client’s stated purpose.
Two or three decisions. No account needed. Leave with a conversation card you can edit and keep.
“We already have an advisor we trust.”
Fictional teaching example. People, dialogue and product details are invented for practice.
Your role: You are a financial advisor in a preliminary conversation with a prospective client.
What you know going in
- No portfolio, fee agreement, tax document or investment plan has been reviewed.
- The client is not asking to replace their current advisor.
- This exercise practices question framing only and provides no financial, tax or investment advice.

Client
We already have an advisor we trust.

What prompted this conversation now?
An incumbent relationship can involve Trust and Mechanism Belief, but the client has not asked to replace it. Start with the purpose of this conversation.
Client
My spouse and I leave reviews with different impressions. I want us to understand the plan together.
Advisor
What did each of you take away from the last meeting?
The couple supplies two different interpretations. Direct questions distinguish what each heard from a conclusion about the plan or advisor.
Client
I heard that things were on track. My spouse heard there were still decisions to make.
Advisor
So the goal is a shared explanation, not necessarily a change of advisor. Would a joint agenda help?
Recap the client’s stated goal: understanding the plan together. Ask for correction; do not assign the absent spouse a position or motive.
Client
Yes. We want to ask about the decisions and leave with a written summary.
Advisor
Let’s list those questions for your next review. You can decide afterward whether any further comparison is useful.
Prepare an accurate agenda for a joint conversation. This is a limited preparation step; the absent spouse’s own questions still need to be heard.
A fresh situation
Try the idea somewhere new
A client values their advisor but receives a proposal describing a new service. They ask what is included and what is extra.
How should you help them compare?
Task-specific feedback; a choice does not establish skill, professional advice, or an industry outcome.
Make it yours
Practise the words before the call
Say your next question aloud once. Listen for whether it invites correction. Then compare it with the worked example.
Read silently or say it aloud. This page does not record you. Keep real client names and private details out of your practice notes.
