A lower payment. What else changes?
Clarify the buyer’s boundaries, keep the terms together, and make the next comparison useful.
Two or three decisions. No account needed. Leave with a conversation card you can edit and keep.
“I need the payment lower.”
Fictional teaching example. People, dialogue and product details are invented for practice.
Your role: You are a dealership salesperson discussing a vehicle and a buyer’s stated payment concern.
What you know going in
- No vehicle, price, rate, payment or financing terms are supplied by this scenario.
- The buyer has stated that extending the term is not acceptable.
- Any actual financing terms must come from current written disclosures and the authorized finance process; this exercise gives no finance recommendation.

A worked conversation
Buyer
I need the payment lower.
Salesperson
Which terms need to stay unchanged as we compare?
A lower-payment objection is a Money objection at Surface Criteria. Clarify which terms matter before treating payment as a standalone saving.
Buyer
I won’t extend the term. I want to see total price too.
Salesperson
Would you like the actual price, term, disclosed rate and total payments together?
The buyer names a non-negotiable term boundary and asks for total price. These facts define a fair diagnostic comparison.
Buyer
Yes. I saw a lower payment elsewhere, but I don’t know if the terms match.
Salesperson
Then let’s leave that comparison open until we have the written offer. I can show our actual disclosed terms with unknowns marked.
Consultative presentation uses the actual written disclosures and leaves missing competitor terms blank.
Buyer
Good. I’ll bring the offer when I have it.
Salesperson
Would you prefer to review it with me then, or contact us if you have questions?
Recap preserves the buyer’s boundary and lets the buyer choose when to continue; no finance recommendation is made.
A fresh situation
Try the idea somewhere new
A buyer compares two vehicles by estimated ownership cost and capability. No current specifications or cost details are in the conversation.
What should you establish before comparing them?
Task-specific feedback; a choice does not establish skill, professional advice, or an industry outcome.
Make it yours
Practise the words before the call
Say your next question aloud once. Listen for whether it invites correction. Then compare it with the worked example.
Read silently or say it aloud. This page does not record you. Keep real client names and private details out of your practice notes.
